One in twenty men suffer from low sperm count. With the increase in usage of laptops, other electronic devices men are boiling their sperms. Low sperm count causes infertility.
Low sperm count
This is called as oligospermia and it occurs when the sperm count is less than 15 million sperm/ml in semen. It is further classified as:
- Mild: 10 – 20 million sperm/mL
- Moderate: 5 – 10 million sperm/mL
- Severe: <5 million sperm/mL
Generally, about 40 million to 120 million sperms are ejaculated during intercourse. In this context, not all millions of sperm reach the tube. Among these millions of sperms, the fastest sperm to reach the fallopian tube penetrates the eggs and fertilizes. So, when a person has low sperm count, the sperms may or may not reach the fallopian tube.
Causes of low sperm count
Too much heat
Exposure to too much heat is a major cause of low sperm count. Even a health young man may suffer from this condition due to excessive heat.
Using laptops on lap all the time
Most men could have heard a lot about not keeping the laptop on the laps. Yes, it is not a myth. Laptops increase the temperature in the genitals and affect the sperm count. Keep your laptop away from your genital area or if you feel too lazy, use a pillow of considerable width.
Hot shower, hot tub bath
A hot shower can be very relaxing. Yet, it is not advised if you are trying to become a father.
Wearing tight / skinny jeans
The genital organs are very tender. You need to provide proper space for good circulation. Wearing tight jeans creates a lot of rigidity and constricts the space. It literally constricts/shrinks the testicles which produce sperms, literally affect the quantity and quality of sperms too.
The same thing applies to wearing tight underwear, not giving enough room to breathe. It is better to go for boxer or loose pants.
Low sperm count? Probably you smoke a lot. Smoking direct impact the reproductive health and even reduce the sperm motility (reduces the ability of the sperm to swim and reach the egg).
Using lubricants can actually makes the intercourse more effective and reduces the friction. However, many times it may backfire.
Many lubricants come with spermicides, which kills the sperms or prevents the sperms motility.
Important factor for optimal sperm production is to maintain healthy weight.
Those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 24 can have a 22 per cent decline in sperm count, and those with a BMI of over 35 are 19 times more likely to experience low sperm count
Alcohol and marijuana
Alcohol consumption or drug abuse directly affects the testosterone level, which reduces the sperm production. Smoking marijuana affects the size and shape of sperm and therefore inhibits sperm function.
If you are trying to conceive, then do not consume marijuana.
Infrequent sex and avoiding sex
Not having sex for a long time is also a cause of low sperm count, yet it naturally resolves.
Men with normal sperm counts who are abstinent for up to 14 days saw a 25 per cent reduction in the percentage of their normal sperm.
Sexually transmitted diseases and infections
History of STDs and STIs can dramatically affect the sperm count level and even production of quality sperms.
Non-stick pans and takeaway wrappers contain PFC’s (perfluorochemicals) which have been shown to cause a reduction in normal sperm.
How to increase sperm counts naturally?
- Avoid wearing too tight pants and jeans. Use comfortable and loose shorts, and cotton briefs.
- Sleep without underwear to let the testicles become cool
- Take warm or cold shower, avoid hot bath/steams
- Exercise regularly to keep the circulation optional (don’t go overboard)
- Reduce the stress levels
- Needless to say, quit smoking and avoid alcohol
- Stay cautious about the environmental exposure
- Eat healthy foods that naturally enhances your reproductive health
- Screen yourself periodically for STIs
Low sperm count is not just about male infertility. It may cause potential risk in a long run including the risk of cancer.
