Treatment for moobs

By | October 10, 2016

Gynecomastia, more commonly known as man boobs or ‘moobs’ is a condition that arises because of overweight or a disorder of the endocrine system. If you are overweight, then exercise can help you to get rid of man boobs. However, if the problem is hormonal, then it can be treated by medicines or a minor surgery.

Gynecomastia is selective deposition of fat in men around breast area. Hormonal imbalances due to puberty, maternal hormones in newborn males and diseases affecting the endocrine system can result in gynecomastia.

It is found that gynecomastia occurs at the onset of puberty in up to 70% adolescent males. However in the majority of cases the symptom clears up within two years.

An alteration in the ratio of estrogen – androgen hormones is the main cause of gynecomastia. As mentioned earlier if these alterations are caused due to puberty, they usually settle down on their own in a couple of years thereby also reversing the symptoms.

How to determine Gynecomastia

If symptoms persist beyond a couple of years after the onset of puberty or if the condition occurs during adulthood then medical help should be sought. A typical investigation by a doctor would involve obtaining a full patient history including and medication the patient is taking, a full physical examination and tests which include liver function, kidney function, thyroid gland function, etc.

There are a number of causative factors:

  • Excess estrogen
  • Drug abuse (like use of marijuana)
  • Caused by use of drugs/medicines
  • Excess presence of estrogen

Several types of cancer can also result in gynecomastia.

Treatment for Gynecomastia

While proper diet and exercise might be enough to eliminate symptoms in milder cases during adolescence, medical treatment is required in more extreme cases.

Treatment includes:

Medication:

Medication is most effective within the first two years of onset of symptoms. There are several medicines that can be prescribed by a doctor to address the cause of the condition. Medication beyond two years is found to have little effectiveness and other forms of treatment are advised.

Surgery:

Once the cause has been identified and taken care of, surgery is the most effective treatment for chronic gynecomastia. These procedures might involve subcutaneous mastectomy, liposuction assisted mastectomy, laser assisted liposuction and laser lipolysis. Other treatments include radiation and cancer medication if the gynecomastia is found to be caused by a cancerous tumour.

In India, cost of surgery for gynecomastia ranges from Rs.35,000 – Rs.1,50,000/- depending on the procedure and where one is getting it done.

Finally, not all breast enlargements are gynecomastia.

All breast enlargement in men are not gynecomastia and it can be caused by accumulation of fat as well. You can take help from CupidCare specialists to identify and also get rid of man boobs.
